M&M Home Remodeling Services constantly looks for ways to give back to the communities in which they service. Whether it’s through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity of NWI, Phil’s Friends or Gary Sinise Foundation we love to make a difference in our communities and in peoples lives.

Back in July, M&M Home Remodeling Services hear of a family who was going through a very tough situation and was needing help. The Neubauers had just purchased an old farm home that was built in 1895, they would turn it into their dream home! Soon after they purchased the property Mike had a farming accident which left him in critical condition. Morgan his wife was unsure of how they were going to get the home ready for her family, with Mike in the hospital and with six children. As you can imagine the stress the family was feeling was overwhelming. It was at this point where M&M alongside other amazing people from their community step forward to help keep their dream alive. It was a wonderful thing to see, a community coming together to help a family in need. M&M Home Remodeling Services sent out a crew to put in a new roof on the home. Take a look at some of the work M&M Home Remodeling Services and other members of the community completed as they make their dream home a reality!

The Swanson family, Samantha, Jonathan, and 1-year-old son unknowingly joined a local roofing contractor’s Facebook Live on Monday, May 3, as the proud recipients of a free, new roof valued at $11,250. The family of frontline workers, with a 15-year-old roof, participated in an Arlington Heights Roof Giveaway social contest where they submitted a family photo and essay on how they have been affected by COVID-19.

On Monday, June 21 at 11 am CST, the Swanson family were joined at their house by members of M&M Home Remodeling Services and Owens Corning to officially accept the free roof replacement in a grand way.

“The shut-down began, and our friends and families were told to work from home. My husband and I continued to drive deserted roads to our own workplaces as a police officer and a nurse. We had new protocols daily, regulations updated by the hour, and a newborn at home,” said Samantha Swanson in her submission essay.

Local roofing contractor, M&M Home Remodeling Services, in partnership with national shingle manufacturer, Owens Corning® Roofing, ignited a roof giveaway contest on social media in April for a resident in Arlington Heights affected in any way by COVID-19.

“Our goal in holding this contract was to lift the spirits of community members who survived, thrived, and wore superhero capes throughout the thick of COVID-19,” says Nick Yadron, President and CEO of M&M Home Remodeling Services.

The roofing contractor received over 150 online submissions from healthcare workers, essential workers, frontline workers, families, employees, and individuals whose day-to-day activities shifted drastically and experienced ongoing uncertainty of what the next day would hold.

“We’re still in shock from the Facebook Live announcement,” said Swanson. “We thought we were joining a Live announcement with other contestants and quickly found we were the only contestants on the Live! Winning this roof means more to our family than we can put into words.”

The Pandemic certainly proved to be difficult for the community of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and the country as a whole. It’s the goal of M&M Home Remodeling Services and Owens Corning Roofing to reward someone who embodies American heroism and stepped up to the front lines when many were asked to stay home and avoid exposure.

Sometimes, help comes when you least expect it. Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana reached out to M&M Home Remodeling Services to install a roof on a new home being built in the “Field of Dreams” neighborhood in Gary. Working against deadlines and desperate to “dry in” the home before winter delivers snow and ice, M&M Home Remodeling Services came to Habitat for Humanity’s rescue, in more than one way.

“Build schedules can be a moving target at Habitat.,” said Dawn Michaels, Habitat for Humanity of NW Indiana Executive Director. “We have six homes currently in varying stages of the build process. We’ve been blessed to have volunteers come out consistently, but because we limit the number of people on a build, things have been progressing slowly this year. Weather, volunteer availability and funding can all impact our progress. So, the timing on this home had us stressed more than usual, plus we didn’t want to send volunteers on the roof during the winter. We were glad that M&M Home Remodeling Services was able to work us into their schedule. But when our Construction Manager, Mark Boroughs not only told me the roof was complete and that M&M Home Remodeling Services representative, Trace Teske told him “no charge”, I was ecstatic! This not only means our partner family will be in their home on time, we’ll be able to devote resources to the next home. We can’t thank M&M Home Remodeling Services enough!”

“As community members purposed with making a difference, we felt a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana was vital to serving people in need,” said Nick Yadron, President & CEO of M&M Home Remodeling Services.

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana serves struggling, working families earning between 30 to 80% of the average income of Lake County, Indiana. It’s through strategic partnerships with local contractors, like M&M Home Remodeling Services, that Habitat is able to make the dream of homeownership a reality.

About M&M Home Remodeling Services

We here at M&M Home Remodeling Services firmly believe that it is important to give back to the community that has given us so much. That’s why partner with charitable organizations in need.

This March we joined forces with a wonderful non-profit organization, Phil’s Friends. Our company is based on a culture of giving, so we assembled the entire M&M team to visit their Crown Point facility and lend a helping hand.

So, on March 6th, we started the day off by going to one of their packing facilities. There, we helped make care packages and decorated the boxes they come in. Those, along with some hand-written cards, will go to the people that are currently fighting cancer.

Not only that, but Phil’s Friends also send out these cards to the people who’ve been in remission for a year to let them know that they are loved.

About Phil’s Friends

Phil Zielke, a two-time cancer survivor, started this non-profit Christian organization in 2006. Knowing how difficult the entire process was first-hand, Phil wanted to reach out and help cancer patients who are still in the midst of it.

That’s when he founded Phil’s Friends, a non-profit organization, based in Indiana.

The organization sends out Care Packages, Cards of Hope, and organizes trips to a half a dozen hospitals in Indiana. In addition to financial help, Phil’s Friends also offer emotional, spiritual, and faith-based support through the way of prayer.

What Phil’s Friends Organization Does

The first way that Phil’s Friends organization helps those fighting cancer is by sending out care packages. Once someone requests one, a team of volunteers will carefully package and deliver it to their hospital, in a colorful and decorated box.

Also, they organize the Cards of Hope Program that sends testimonials, heartfelt messages, and words of encouragement to cancer patients. These cars help let them know that they’re not alone in their fight and that they have the support they need to get through it.

Lastly, once a month, the volunteers from Phil’s Friends deliver these packages to the:

  • Rush Medical Center
  • University of Chicago Medical Center
  • Loyola University Medical Center
  • Franciscan Cancer Center Munster
  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital
  • Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital

How Others Can Get Involved

Phil’s Friends organization has made it incredibly easy for anyone to volunteer and start helping. For example, they encourage groups of 10 or less to use their walk-in sessions.

On the other hand, those who have a big group of friends or have their own business and want to help out can schedule a group session.

What’s more, Phil’s Friends encourages families with kids to come down to one of their packing centers to help out. While the adults are busy packing, the little ones can write and draw colorful cards to cheer up cancer patients.

For more information, we recommend taking a look at the Volunteer section of their website. They also have a Donate section, for those who’d like to get involved but don’t have time.

So please, if anyone wants help and donate their time or resources, we suggest taking a look at Phil’s Friends Organization. Just a few hours of our time can mean the world to someone and there are no downsides to it.

The team at M&M was honored to receive the opportunity to give back to a local veteran in a big way with help from the Gary Sinise Foundation.

United States Marines Corps Cpl. Chad Watson, who lost a leg and sustained other injuries while serving with the Marines in Iraq in 2006, received a brand new home Thursday, October 17.

The Gary Sinise Foundation identified that the family’s former home in Frankfort was not built with the intention of someone with a disability, so they decided to build Cpl. Watson a brand new ‘Smart Home.’

“Just going down the hallway to the kids’ bedrooms” was challenging, Watson said. “Minor things, like going out to get something from the car, or doing laundry” were constant inconveniences.

The “smart home” technology allows someone to turn lights on or off, open or close blinds and perform other tasks on a computer tablet. “This home is accessible,” Jillian Watson said. “Our old home had areas that Chad would avoid.”

The entire home is intended to make life easier for an individual with a disability and nobody is more deserving than Cpl. Watson and his family. The team here at M&M was fortunate enough to be able to pitch in, donating the materials and labor to put a roof on the Watson family’s new home.
